Description

Dialogues, an extraordinary collaboration between cellist Noémie Raymond and pianist Zhenni Li-Cohen, is a heartfelt conversation between two instruments, two composers, and two kindred spirits. Born from a deep friendship forged during their time at the Heifetz International Music Institute, Noémie and Zhenni bring a rare synergy to this recording, showcasing their shared passion for music and their complementary artistry.

Highlighting the only duo sonatas by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Rebecca Clarke, the album bridges the contrasting yet interconnected worlds of these two composers. Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19, a Romantic masterpiece, reflects the composer’s personal renewal following a period of creative struggle. With lush, lyrical melodies and a profound dialogue between cello and piano, the sonata honors the Russian cellist Anatoly Brandukov, who inspired its deeply expressive cello lines. Clarke’s Sonata for Viola (performed here on cello), written amidst her own journey of resilience, blends English Impressionism with Romantic intensity. Initially overshadowed by societal biases against women composers, Clarke’s work has since risen to claim its rightful place in the standard repertoire.

Noémie Raymond, praised for her “immense sensitivity and incomparable talent” (Journal des Citoyens), is an internationally celebrated cellist who has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, from the Royal Albert Hall to the Lima International Music Festival. Her refined, impassioned playing is enriched by her commitment to education and cultural advocacy, as well as her exquisite Matteo Goffriller cello, “Ex-Curtis” (1700), generously loaned by Canimex.

Zhenni Li-Cohen, described by Gramophone Magazine as an artist of “tremendous conviction,” is a Steinway Artist whose performances captivate audiences worldwide with their bold, emotive power. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, or the Helsinki Music Center, Zhenni’s artistry leaves a lasting impression, blending technical brilliance with profound musical insight.

Together, Noémie and Zhenni create an intimate, vibrant dialogue that transcends the notes on the page. Dialogues is not only a celebration of two monumental works but also a testament to the duo’s artistic bond and shared vision. Supported by Forte Art & Music, Orford Music, and the Father Lindsay Foundation, this recording invites listeners into a unique musical journey—a reflection of friendship, resilience, and the boundless beauty of collaboration.
